Conference Platform (Whova)

As an ISLS 2023 attendee, whether registered for an in-person or online experience, you are invited to interact with your fellow researchers and practitioners before, during and after the event. We will use the online event platforms Whova and Gather.Town in order to facilitate this experience. In this way we are bringing back the in-person conference experience you love, while providing new opportunities to be inclusive of and network with those who will be attending remotely from abroad. And, in doing so, we continue to promote networking among researchers and practitioners, meeting new people with common interests, having lively discussions and generating new ideas for your research.

While the Annual Meeting returns to an in-person format, we offer the following opportunities for remote participant access and participation. Keynote talks will be livestreamed via Whova, with papers and abstracts uploaded by each speaker with Whova’s Q&A and chat tools enabling asynchronous conversations between speakers and attendees. Social networking opportunities will be provided by Gather.Town, accessible to both online and in-person attendees. In addition, organisers of sessions (such as interactive symposia) are invited to organise hybrid sessions (by managing and posting their own Zoom links to their session descriptions in Whova), although most session formats (e.g., long paper, short paper, poster, technical paper, etc.) are likely to take place fully in-person with the dedicated virtual space on Whova for asynchronous discussion with presenters. NOTE: Hybrid sessions will be tagged as Hybrid to support program filtering by this format.

Whova Online Event Platform

Whova will allow attendees to access the program and interact with the speakers and organisers:

  • View the conference Agenda and plan your schedule
  • Access keynote livestreams* and videos directly within sessions
  • For all session formats, use the session Q&A to asynchronously interact with speakers
  • Set up Virtual Meet-Ups with your fellow attendees to connect remotely
  • Create and converse through various discussion topics in the Community Board

*Closed Captioning will be available for keynote presentations.

Join us in the Virtual Conference Venue

Social events have been an important part of all previous ISLS conferences. While this year we are returning to in-person social events, we are keeping the online social spaces that have become important affordance, available for Virtual Meetups and select sessions. We invite you to explore the Virtual Conference Venue and to interact with colleagues and friends.

The Virtual Conference Venue exists within Gather.Town, a 2D Virtual Space in which you can see yourself and others in a virtual “room” with the ability to move around and interact with other participants to allow for real-life like situations and interactions. Users can easily start and end conversations and chats or return to a main speaker just like at a real-world conference. You can simply walk your avatar to tables and chairs, sit down and start a conversation with other attendees.
